Working for the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR)
The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR) is consistently ranked in the top 20 faculties of its type worldwide (QS World University Rankings). It is home to approximately 1400 undergraduate students and 130 graduate students. In addition to its four undergraduate degree programs, KSR also offers Masters degrees, a suite of graduate certificates, and a world-class PhD program.
Position
The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta is accepting applications for one full-time career status Academic Teaching Staff position (Rank, Assistant Teaching Professor) that will include 80% Teaching and Teaching Related Activities, 10% Service, and 10% Research. Teaching topics and areas of expertise specific to this position include Anatomy, Human Gross Anatomy, Physiology of Exercise, Clinical Exercise Physiology, Assessment of Fitness and Health, Applied Resistance and/or Endurance Training, Biological Aspects of Fitness and Health, and Health Education.
This position requires primarily in-person teaching and teaching-related activities, on the University Campus, to facilitate students' learning and progress through their degree program as well as the operational needs of the Faculty.
Term Length: Career Position
Desired Start Date: April 1, 2025 (to be negotiated with the successful candidate). The successful candidate may be required to teach in the Spring 2025 term.
Duties
Teaching and Teaching Related Activities (80%):
Provides primarily in-person instruction to undergraduate, graduate, and/or graduate certificate students in settings such as classroom and laboratory (including sports and recreation facilities), fieldwork, electives, guest lectures, and seminars; distance or web-based delivery may also be required;
Supports curriculum and related logistics to support students challenging selected professional certifications relevant to position content areas including Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) designations;
Decides course content, course design, and instructional methodology and delivery for assigned courses;
Decides student evaluation methodologies for the assigned course(s), monitors student progress, and provides timely feedback for classroom, laboratory, fieldwork, and practicum requirements;
Ensures availability for student consultation within and outside of scheduled class, laboratory, fieldwork, or practicum times;
Participates in graduate-level capstone projects, and/or serves as co-supervisor or committee member for thesis-based students and/or undergraduate thesis projects;
Participates in inter-professional teaching activities and/or coordinates activities and instructors in shared courses;
Contributes to content for incoming student orientation activities;
Provides instruction, supervision or co-supervision, and/or mentorship to students (e.g., supervision undergraduate practicums/In field learning placements, undergraduate directed projects and theses, course-based masters research projects);
Participates in scholarly teaching by remaining current and competent in the assigned course content, course design, and instructor performance in the classroom or clinical/fieldwork setting;
Engages in teaching-related administrative duties;
Attends orientations, academic-specific meetings or retreats, course-related meetings, and other activities related to teaching assignments;
Other clearly defined teaching activities as appropriate, assigned, and agreed to at the time of appointment or during subsequent annual assignments.
Service to the Faculty (10%):
Participates in the governance of the Faculty through committee membership related to teaching and scholarship (e.g., Academic teaching staff evaluation committee; Undergraduate programs committee);
Participates in, or leads curriculum/ program reviews for accreditation (e.g., Canadian Council of University Physical Education and Kinesiology Administrators (CCUPEKA));
Participates in, or leads, curriculum development or specific curriculum-related initiatives;
Provides teaching mentorship and develops/delivers teaching development content for other instructors and trainees;
Participates in, or leads, teaching-related committees both within and external to KSR;
Demonstrates teaching-related leadership and advocacy;
Participate in, or chair, student appeals committees; Serve in Faculty administrative positions.
Research (10%):
Research may be focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning or in the discipline area of the teaching professor. Such activities are expected to typically be in a co-investigator/collaborator role and may include:
Pursuing or securing research funding;
Authored publications in peer-reviewed journals or books; Presentations at scientific and/or professional venues;
Engaging in knowledge translation exchange (KTE) activities;
The degree of voluntary participation in other research and/or scholarly activities may vary across ATS members, and from time to time, and will be considered supplementary to the ATS member's primary University responsibilities (i.e., not recognized for merit or promotion).
Minimum Qualifications
PhD Degree in Kinesiology or a related field is required at the start date of the position with at least one degree in Kinesiology or exercise science (Bachelors, Masters or PhD).
Recent and relevant experience in post-secondary (University and/or College) teaching at the undergraduate/graduate level with a demonstrated high level of competence (minimum experience of teaching two 3.0 credit post-secondary courses in the specified areas as primary instructor).
Demonstrated strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, indigenization (EDI+I), and decolonization within their teaching practice.
Content expertise in the specified topic areas.
Ability to design and/or select, as well as administer effective assessments.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication style and to collaborate with colleagues.
Critical thinking and organizational ability.
A commitment to learner-centred innovative teaching and learning practices, and continuous quality improvement.
Committed to the creation to the creation of safe and supportive learning and working environments, including knowledge of and commitment to KSR and U of A equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) policies and practices.
Ability to collaborate and engage in shared decision-making within a team and fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated accountability and responsibility for carrying out duties and activities assigned and/or agreed upon.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
CSEP-CEP and CPT certification will be considered an asset. Pursuing certification post-hiring may be required.
Non-academic and/or private sector work experience as a professional in Kinesiology, health science, sports, and/or recreation is considered an asset.
