What will you be doing:
The Clinical Interpreter/Translator, under the general direction of a licensed care giver, facilitates communication between physicians, nurses, volunteers, non-clinical staff, patients, patients' families and the community. Responsibilities include oral interpretation, written translation (as needed), session statistics, service rounds, special projects, office duties, and assisting volunteers within the Medical Center. Position requires a high level of expertise and professionalism in interpreting and translating techniques, and performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the age and developmental issues of the patient populations served that include: the hearing impaired; limited English; and non-English speaking populations. Provides care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds.
Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements and accrediting bodies. Exercises independent problem-solving abilities. Will work in a highly visible, very active environment. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule.
Interprets between English and other languages for Cedars-Sinai staff and patient/family while maintaining confidentiality, safeguarding the patient?s interests, and completing the appropriate documentation after each session.
Completes written translations (as needed), such as instructions, letters from quality assurance, education materials, schedules, questions from patient, and other translations, assuring that the content is conveyed accurately and efficiently.
Completes special projects or other tasks on a timely basis as per departmental guidelines.
Adheres to departmental guidelines and adapts to changes in unit when policies and procedures change.
Functions as a resource to physicians, nursing staff, and others staff members for clinical interpretation.
Processes and maintains each session documentation as needed.
Provides appropriate referral/triage regarding identified remote medical interpreting program(s).
Interprets between English and the target language for Cedars-Sinai staff and patient/family according to departmental guidelines.
Completes accurate Session Records or other work time documentation as needed and according to departmental guidelines.
Completes written translations as needed and according to departmental guidelines.
Completes special projects or other tasks on a timely basis as per departmental guidelines. Adheres to departmental guidelines and adapts to changes in unit when policies and procedures change. Performs other related duties or special projects as assigned or required.
Qualifications
Experience Requirements:
Two (2) plus years of experience in translating, reading and writing documents in English to the target language within a medical setting, with a full command of the English language and knowledge of medical terminology.
Bilingual in Arabic and English (speaking, writing, reading).
Educational/Certification Requirements:
High School Diploma/GED.
Bachelor?s degree in Linguistics, foreign languages, translation and interpretation, communication or related field. (preferred)
Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI), issued by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI), or CHI, to be obtained within 1-year of start date.
Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI), issued by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), to be obtained within 1-year of start date.
Training Programs:
Medical Center Interpreter Services Language Proficiency Assessment/Training Program, to be completed within 90-days of start date.
Interpreter Training Program, to be completed within 90-days of start date.
