General Summary
Under limited supervision, assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a program of research in collaboration with nurses and other healthcare providers.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

- Mentors nurses and patient care services (PCS) staff to identify patient care problems and processes that can be addressed through nursing inquiry.
- Identifies and obtains best available assessment methods to evaluate target outcomes.
- Generates and facilitates the use of research evidence in guiding nursing practice.
- Provides consultation in research methods and data analysis to guide decision-making in the research program.
- Mentors nurses and PCS staff in developing data collection and management skills.
- Manages databases, including data entry and cleaning.
- Performs descriptive and inferential statistics using statistical software packages to analyze data generated from nursing and PCS research and evidence-based practice projects.
- Assists in the development of research grant proposals.
- Reviews research proposals to ensure scientific merit.
- Collaborates with other nurse scientists, internal and external to UMMC, to coordinate research activities.
- Develops and maintains policies and standards within the research program that meet institutional review board regulatory requirements.
- Assists nurses and PCS staff in the dissemination of scholarly projects, including the preparation of abstracts and manuscripts.
- Assists in the identification of learning needs of nurses and PCS staff in relation to nursing inquiry and develops educational activities for nursing and PCS staff.
- Active participant of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Institutional Review Board.
- Develops and maintains a personal program of research.
- Makes scholarly presentations at regional and national levels.
- Participates in regional and national nursing research organizations
Patient Safety
Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
- Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety
- Reports adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management authority.
- Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices, and communicates the same to those in charge.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
- A doctoral (PhD) degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing or Healthcare field is required.
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland, or eligibility to practice due to Compact State agreements outlined through the Maryland Board of Nursing, is required.
- Five years of hospital experience is required; nursing experience preferred.
- Eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Maryland School of Nursing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Clinical and professional knowledge of current issues relevant to health care delivery and professional practice is required. Knowledge of regulatory requirements for the protection of human subjects research.
- Knowledge of clinical nursing research design, methods, database management and data analysis using statistical software packages is required.
- Ability to plan, organize, and follow through on projects with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated success in exhibiting teaching, coaching, and development skills.
- Demonstrated success in dissemination of research, including scholarly presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
