Job Summary
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health (DH) Medical Center is seeking an experienced board-certified Emergency Medical Services (EMS) physician to serve as an Associate Chair of EMS within the Department of Emergency Medicine. This position is responsible for strategy-setting and oversight for DH’s EMS services across all clinical, academic, and community mission areas. This includes, but is not limited to, clinical medical direction (i.e., Denver Health Paramedic Division (DHPD), other contracted agencies, and community paramedic programs,) Resident & Fellow education, and EMS education and research activities. In addition to the oversight of the above mentioned areas, this position serves as the primary Medical Director for the Denver Health Paramedics. Importantly, this position is also responsible for working collaboratively with the EMS Medical Director for the Department of Safety for the City and County of Denver in the delivery of EMS within the service area including the Denver 911 Call Center. Lastly, this position serves as a core member on the Department of Emergency Medicine’s leadership team, supporting all clinical and academic missions for the department.
The Denver Health Paramedic Division is a key provider of emergency medical services for the City and County of Denver including Denver International Airport. The Division also provides service to the cities of Sheridan, Glendale, Englewood as well as the Skyline Fire Protection District. In addition to this position, medical direction and oversight are the responsibility of a cohesive senior command team of Paramedic leadership, and four Associate Medical Directors. The Division employs over 400 staff consisting of 270 paramedics and EMT’s, 42 Command Staff Members and 90 support staff which includes Denver Health Dispatchers at the Denver 911 Call Center. The division staffs 50+ ALS & BLS ambulance shifts a day and up to 4 emergency service patrol ambulances. The Division responds to more than 130,000 calls each year and is the busiest EMS service in the state. Through the Rita Bass Trauma and EMS Education Institute, Denver Health Paramedics provide nationally recognized training for emergency medical technicians and paramedics, as well as continuing education and community training, in which emergency medicine providers act as course directors and assist as instructors. The Department and Division also sponsor the well-established and best-in-class Denver Health ACGME-accredited EMS Fellowship, which graduates two fellows per year.
Clinically, the Emergency Department (ED) at Denver Health includes a 57-bed adult ED, a 19-bed pediatric ED and urgent care, and a 23-bed Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) providing observation medicine. With a combined annual census of more than 115,000 patients from highly diverse cultures and backgrounds, the ED at Denver Health is the second busiest in Colorado. The Ernest E. Moore MD Shock Trauma Center at Denver Health is the primary trauma referral center for the Rocky Mountain Region. Additionally, the acuity managed by the adult ED is high, with a 25% admission rate. Staffing in the adult and pediatric EDs is provided by board-certified emergency physicians, emergency medicine residents, EM subspecialty fellows, and advanced practice providers. Strong and extremely collaborative relationships exist among physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, and consulting services.
Academically, our Department takes great pride in sponsoring the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine, an exemplary four-year ACGME training program with 68 total residents, producing graduates with outstanding clinical acumen and leadership qualities who are furthering the specialty of Emergency Medicine. DH also sponsors EM fellowship training programs in research, emergency medical services, ultrasound, and pediatric ultrasound. Our educational, research and patient-service focused programs all thrive though a cohesive lens of social emergency medicine. In coming years, our Department sees significant opportunity to strategically grow our research and scholarship in EMS, leveraging our relationships with the University of Colorado School of Medicine (SOM) and the SOM’s Center for Combat Medicine and Battlefield (COMBAT) Research.
While all DH departmental faculty ultimately report to the DH Chair of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health, contributing to the mission of patient care, education, research, and professional development, they also have meaningful responsibilities and faculty appointments in the School of Medicine’s academic Department of Emergency Medicine. As such, all faculty have a strong, collaborative reporting relationship to our School of Medicine’s Departmental Chair and are expected to contribute and promote in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
