For over a century, UTMB has dedicated its efforts toward improving people’s health in Texas and beyond. In addition to designing and implementing innovative ways to deliver instruction to students at distant locations, the school continuously explores opportunities to expand its offerings and interprofessional learning. The UTMB School of Health Professions offers certifications, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level health profession programs. In addition to classroom lectures and state-of-the-art simulation experiences, our programs offer clinical training opportunities in a variety of settings to ensure our students have exposure to a multitude of professional opportunities.
Senior Vice President and Dean - School of Health Professions is the chief administrative and academic officer of the school and is responsible for its strategic, research, academic, clinical, and business affairs. The Dean is responsible for faculty and staff recruitment and empowerment, faculty shared governance, research productivity and funding, student’s enrollment and excellent student experience, programmatic development and growth, programs and school national reputation and ranking, collaborations with other schools, the health system, and the community.
The next Dean of the School of Health Professions will be a visionary leader and strategic thinker, deeply committed to advancing the School’s mission and will foster scientific discovery, support and strengthen academic programs, and enhance clinical outreach and service into the broader University and healthcare communities.
Essential Job Functions
- Provide strategic oversight and expertise for all aspects of the School, including representation of the School within the University of Texas Medical Branch and beyond.
- Provide leadership and oversight for the strategic planning and implementation of our key missions of education, research, clinical practice, and professional service in the School of Health Professions.
- Recruit, appoint and serve as the reporting official for senior staff, Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Program Directors, and Departmental Chairs in the School.
- Develop best practices and standards necessary to achieve programs and school national reputation and rankings.
- Participate in the planning, coordination and reporting of meetings involving senior leaders within the institution.
- Lead with integrity and transparency through consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes.
- Expand and enhance the strength of scholarship, teaching, and clinical and service programs within the School, building on existing strengths and creating new areas of excellence.
- Develop collaborative relationships with the other schools on campus.
- Advocate for all disciplines and programs and all faculty, staff, and students in the School.
- Participate in university-wide innovative efforts to create a more efficient, effective, cohesive, and high?quality academic enterprise and maintains the financial health of the School.
- Support and ensure compliance with accreditation standards for School programs.
- Lead and assist in securing extramural and philanthropic resources necessary for the growth and improvement of the School.
- Support and cooperate in a mutually beneficial relationship with alumni, professional associations, and other organizations and community leaders.
- Ensure that the School has effective programs related to student recruitment, retention, advising, and student success activities.
- Engage and actively support the professions represented in the School at the local, state, national, and global levels.

- Ability to grow and lead a vibrant research program; personal or organizational success in guiding a scientific vision, expanding support for research programs, and recruiting research faculty.
- A record of developing innovative programs and learning opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
- Interest in and capacity to achieve success in fundraising and philanthropy.
- Proven ability to build effective partnerships within a school, university, and broader community.
- Ability to develop a strong leadership team and to delegate authority and hold team members accountable within a complex, evolving, and dynamic environment.
Educational Requirements/Experience
- M.D., Ph.D., or Ed.D.
- Health professions education and education processes.
- Faculty development and faculty governance.
- Student admission and matriculation.
- Curriculum planning and development.
- Fiscal, resource and space planning, development and control.
- Evidence of scholarly productivity.
- Health care.
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive responsibility in higher education.
- Eligible for an appointment at Professor level.
- Chair of a Health Professions department and/or experience as a School of Health Professions Associate or Vice Dean is preferred but not required.
