Director of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology, Standing Faculty
Location: Philadelphia Open Date: May 21, 2026
The Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology (CEET). This is a national search for an accomplished and visionary leader to guide CEET into its next phase of scientific innovation, impact, and growth.
The Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology is a nationally recognized, NIEHS-funded Environmental Health Sciences Core Center dedicated to elucidating how environmental exposures affect human health and disease and translating discoveries into improved health outcomes. CEET brings together a diverse group of basic, clinical, and population scientists across Penn and its partner institutions, with strong commitments to community engagement, team science, and workforce development.
The Director will provide scientific, strategic, and administrative leadership for CEET, shaping the Center's vision and ensuring continued excellence in research, training, and community engagement. The Director will serve as the primary representative of CEET within the Perelman School of Medicine and the larger University of Pennsylvania community as well as regional and national communities.
The Director will be expected to:
Articulate and advance a compelling scientific and strategic vision for CEET
Lead and integrate multidisciplinary research programs in environmental health sciences
Oversee CEET cores, programs, and governance structures
Maintain and strengthen NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences Core Center funding
Foster mentoring, training, and career development for early-stage investigators and trainees
Promote meaningful community engagement and translation of environmental health research
Serve as an advocate for environmental health sciences across the University and beyond
Candidates for the position must hold a PhD and/or MD degree and qualify for an appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level in the Standing Faculty of the PSOM at the University of Pennsylvania. The faculty appointment will be in a department within the School of Medicine that aligns with the successful candidate's scientific expertise. Candidates should have a strong record of leadership as well as an established, externally funded research program in environmental health sciences or a closely related field. The impact of the research program will be carefully reviewed.
Preferred qualifications include:
Experience leading large, multidisciplinary or center-level initiatives
Prior involvement with NIEHS-funded programs or environmental health core centers
Demonstrated commitment to health equity and community-engaged research
Applications are due June 23, 2026. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter describing leadership experience and vision for CEET, a curriculum vitae and a brief statement of research to the attention of Garret A. FitzGerald, MD via this posting.
