The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), in partnership with IU Health Medical Group (IUHMG), is seeking a motivated, academically focused microbiologist to join our Division of Clinical Microbiology. This position offers an outstanding opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and expanding academic health system and to support the continued growth of clinical, research, and educational excellence across Indiana. The candidate will join a team of five academic microbiologists and have opportunities to participate in innovation, quality improvement, and outreach initiatives. Candidates who wish to pursue a leadership path and demonstrate progressive leadership experience may be considered for the Division Director position. For MD candidates applying for the Director role, the position is supported by an endowed professorship. Rank and track (tenure or clinical) will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
Key Responsibilities: Academic Microbiologist: • Provide clinical microbiology expertise, including oversight of diagnostic testing, test interpretation, and consultative support for clinicians. • Participate in quality assurance, method validation, test development, and continuous improvement within the IU Health Division of Clinical Microbiology. • Collaborate with infection prevention, infectious diseases, pharmacy, and other clinical teams to support patient care and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives. • Contribute to the implementation and evaluation of new diagnostic technologies, platforms, and strategies. • Develop and maintain a productive scholarly program in areas such as microbiology, infectious diseases, diagnostic innovation, antimicrobial resistance, or host–pathogen interactions. • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows (including Clinical Microbiology Fellows), and graduate students. • Engage in outreach, community engagement, diversity initiatives, and strategic program development within the division and department. • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture among faculty, trainees, and staff. • Participate in interdisciplinary research activities across the department, school, and health system; encouraged to explore clinical/translational research.
Director Responsibilities: • Lead the growth and development of diagnostic microbiology services across the IU Health system, including consultative support for the Academic Health Center and regional facilities. • Collaborate within a statewide network of infectious disease diagnosticians and healthcare partners, including Riley Hospital for Children, the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, and Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. • Support clinical and translational research activities. • Promote educational excellence through active engagement with trainees from multiple programs, including: o ACGME-accredited Medical Microbiology Fellowship o American Society for Microbiology CPEP-accredited Medical and Public Health Laboratory Microbiology Fellowship o Pathology residents, Infectious Disease fellows, Pharmacy residents, medical students, and Medical Laboratory Science students • Provide mentorship and academic advising for trainees and junior faculty. • Oversee the Division of Clinical Microbiology, including technical, regulatory, and quality management responsibilities.

Basic Qualifications: • MD/DO, MD-PhD, PhD, or equivalent degree. • Board-certified clinical pathology or anatomic and clinical pathology. • Board-certified in Medical Microbiology by either the American Board of Pathology or the American Board of Medical Microbiology. • Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Indiana. • Demonstrated commitment to academic medicine and scholarly activities.
