We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for the Duke Department of Pediatrics - Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Health, Section of Child Abuse Pediatrics, within the Duke Child Abuse and Neglect Medical Evaluation Team (CANMEC) located in Durham, North Carolina.
We are seeking an individual with experience in pediatric care, child maltreatment evaluation, foster care medicine, or complex care coordination, with excellent communication and clinical skills and the ability to function as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Participation in call coverage will be required. Graduated supervision and increasing levels of independence will be provided based on demonstrated competency and performance.
Perform Child Medical Evaluations for children referred for concerns of abuse, neglect, medical neglect, or other child safety concerns.
As needed, assist in coordinating urgent outpatient referrals and evaluations related to child maltreatment concerns.
Participate in weekly multidisciplinary case conference and case review meetings.
Participate in multidisciplinary community meetings, including child protection and quality review activities, as assigned.
Provide clinical guidance and telephone consultation to DUHS providers, pediatric practices, emergency departments, inpatient teams, and community agencies requesting support in the medical evaluation of possible child maltreatment. Serve as a responsive and collaborative resource, fostering positive relationships with referral sources and representing the program with professionalism, expertise, and excellent customer service, with support from Child Abuse Pediatricians.
Function as a liaison between the primary medical team, medical consultants, pediatric subspecialists, nursing, social work, community care providers, Child Protective Services, and other agencies involved in child safety and permanency planning.
Assist with care coordination, referrals, and linkage to behavioral health, medical subspecialty care, developmental services, and other community resources for high-risk pediatric patients.
Participate in development, completion, and documentation of CANMEC medical consultation reports and clinical recommendations in the electronic medical record.
Represent Duke Health in legal, multidisciplinary, and community proceedings related to child maltreatment evaluations, including provision of factual or expert testimony as appropriate and in accordance with institutional policies.
Participate in child welfare-related meetings as assigned.
Support education, process improvement, and clinical program development initiatives within CANMEC and Duke Health.
Collaborate with faculty, fellows, residents, APPs, nurses, and learners in the provision of evidence-based care for vulnerable pediatric populations.
EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
Assess educational needs of patients and caregivers and provide education interventions as indicated, developing appropriate teaching tools as needed.
Utilize Duke Health resources to ensure patient and family educational materials meet institutional standards.
Participate in the education of medical students, resident physicians, fellows, APP students, nursing learners, social work trainees, and interprofessional team members.
Provide continuing education and training related to child abuse and neglect, foster care health, trauma-informed care, and vulnerable pediatric populations for Duke faculty, staff, trainees, and community partners.
Maintain clinical excellence through continuing professional development, literature review, multidisciplinary case conferences, and participation in educational opportunities relevant to child maltreatment and foster care medicine.
RESEARCH UTILIZATION AND PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT
Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and clinical program development activities of the Duke Child Abuse and Neglect Medical Evaluation Team (CANMEC).
Participate in interdisciplinary performance improvement and clinical research activities designed to promote evidence-based practice and improve outcomes for children evaluated for abuse, neglect, and foster care-related health concerns.
Contribute to programmatic evaluation, clinical data review, and scholarly activities as appropriate.
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.
Certification
BLS required. PALS optional.
License
Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the State of North Carolina and Approval to Practice by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Must be Board Certified from a national certifying board in the appropriate patient population focus.
Physician Assistants: Must be licensed by the North Carolina Medical Board and be Board Certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
Both: Must demonstrate and maintain credentialing and licensing requirements of Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP) and Duke Health. Current DEA licensure required.
Preferred Qualifications
Pediatric experience, 2-5 years as and APP or RN preferred.
PICU, Emergency room experience preferred.
Prior experience in Child Medical Evaluations preferred.
Job Hours
Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm with the expectation of graduated call coverage 24/7 every fourth week.
